Abstract

In the last 30 years, no new varieties of sugarcane have been obtained in the southeast of Mexico, currently 116 thousand ha are cultivated, of which 70% of the surface is cultivated with five varieties: CP 72-2086 and Mex 69-290, Mex 79-431, RD 75-11 and ITV 92-1424. The national yield is 68.6 ton.ha-1, while in the southeast of the country, it is 57.8 ton.ha-1, coupled with this, aged sugarcane fields, with disease problems and with high percentages of mixture of varieties. This problem causes losses to the detriment of producers and industrialists. Starting in 2006, the Tabasco Campus of the Posgraduate College began the Genetic Improvement Program with the planting of botanical seeds of sugarcane, seven varieties have been recommended to producers who have adopted four varieties, COLPOSCTMEX 06-039, COLPOSCTMEX 05 -223, MEX 08-1270, COLPOSCTMEX and COLPOSCTMEX 05-204
