Abstract
Conventional plant breeding of various species requires the formation and evaluation of lines, hybrids and checks in extensive field experiments, for several cycles and through different environments. Such processes originate factors that affect natural resources and/or harm human health. The generation of dihaploids and the molecular analysis of the general combining ability are viable methodologies that, when integrated and implemented in the classic procedures for plant breeding of annual and perennial species, would contribute to make breeding programs more efficient and sustainable.
